CHAPTER 13
Bluish gray light silhouetted Ian as he walked in front of Ben and Sarah, the sound of damp, waterlogged mud squishing with every step.
Ian paused as the full breadth of the building came into view. Random containers and vehicles sat at odd angles as the item that had stopped the young man in his tracks revealed itself to the rest of the group.
There, sitting under one of the dim lights, was Tinaâs bike. Even more distressing was the sniper rifle leaning against the seat. One thing all three of them knew was that she would never leave that rifle on its own for more than a few minutes.
Silence hung in the air, high-fiving the droning sound of the creeping wall of zombies.
âLook,â Ben pointed, walking toward the bike. A few feet away from Tinaâs motorcycle was a small propane holding cage with a ladder leading up to a small roof. Even more inviting was the door with a small light illuminating its handle.
Ben thought the entire scene was too obvious, but he would take the easy way out with the amount of pain heading their way.
The motley crew climbed the ladder, starting to realize the artificiality of the situation. The cars formed a pattern, funneling its victims to the front of the mega box store. It struck Ben that they hadnât put such detail into the back of the facility.
âIt looks like she pried the door open,â Sarah noted as Ian reached for the door in what seemed like slow motion.
âNo!â Ben barked as the once dim lights went into kiss-my-ass overdrive, flooding the building in light as if it were getting baptized. Adding insult to injury, the shriek of the buildingâs alarm sang like it wanted to wake the gods themselves.
Ben had learned his lesson about opening doors in buildings with power. Sweat started pouring down his back as he slapped the flashlight hanging off the barrel of his rifle on, rushing into the buildingâonly to slam into a rail.
Scanning the wall, Ben saw no trace of wires or physical alarms. He started hating the organized, well-constructed building even more as Sarah and Ian joined him.
There was no point in talking with the alarm ringing through everyoneâs head. Panic started to sink in as the light from outside started to fade as the door slowly crept shut. It became quickly evident that the literal sirens were located outside of the building. Sarah, figuring this out, lurched forward, pulling the door shut.
The group froze, their ears still ringing from the now silenced alarms. A head-splitting whine remained, rattling around their heads as if the sirens were still doing their job.
âWhat in the living hell was that?â Ian blurted out louder than needed due to the lingering buzz.
âThat was an alarm,â Ben replied sarcastically as Sarah whistled at the two men. She was standing in front of a smudged store map showing all the emergency exits. Ben walked up to Sarah, also taking in the extent of the damage in the back of the warehouse.
